    Great Basin Bird Observatory

Jun 2025 — Present · Reno, NV, US

As an Avian Survey Technician with the Great Basin Bird Observatory, I contribute to large-scale avian monitoring efforts across Nevada, supporting research and conservation of native bird species and their habitats. Operating under established field protocols and utilizing geospatial tools, I assist in comprehensive data collection across diverse ecosystems to inform long-term population trends and habitat management strategies.• Deploy and retrieve automated recording units (ARUs) and remote cameras across various habitats statewide, adhering to rigorous field protocols and utilizing ArcGIS Field Maps for precise georeferencing and navigation.• Conduct point count transects as part of the statewide Nevada Bird Count, identifying all breeding bird species in Nevada by sight and sound with high accuracy to assess species richness and abundance.• Perform rapid vegetation assessments at survey sites, identifying dominant vegetation communities and structural characteristics to support avian-habitat relationship analysis.• Carry out detailed area searches on designated plots to document avian habitat use, territorial behavior, and breeding activity. Record and map observations using Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps.• Conduct Pinyon Jay surveys following landscape-scale monitoring protocols, documenting flock behavior, movement patterns, and habitat associations to inform conservation. • Conducted wildlife mortality surveys and point counts at a utility-scale solar facility, including participation in carcass persistence and searcher efficiency trials.• Utilize 4WD vehicles to access remote survey sites across steep and rugged terrain, camping independently for up to 10 consecutive days and hiking 6–8+ miles daily through varied and challenging landscapes.
