I am currently managing a large team of experienced modellers from multi-consultancies to produce a set of production version 2 for the five sub-regional Highway Assignment Models (HAMs) in house. These models are amongst the largest and most complex in the world.The task includes carrying out a thorough review of the models, rebuilding the matrices, reconstructing detailed networks and calibrating/validating the models to DfT: DMRB specified criteria, making use of Matrix Estimation techniques. Providing good documentation to describe our models and guidance note to guide their users, ensuring that the HAM models are used well: in appropriate applications, by customers who understand how the models can guide them to inform policy making and managing development applications. Carry out research to find better ways of using and developing our models. GPS-derived origin-destination data is already showing promise. Integrating GIS INT and HAM networks has been achieved and combing all five HAMs to create a London-wide (LoHAM) model, from which we draw off a local model specific to any area, is now a realistic aim.
