ABOUT HUMAYRA ALAM

I am an architect and PhD student in the Architecture program at Texas A&M University. Through my research, I look into how buildings represent transnational identity and diasporic negotiations in the US. My master’s thesis was focused on the architecture of mosques developed by South Asian immigrants in the Greater Houston Area since the passing of the 1965 Hart-Cellar Act. My doctoral research explores how the lived experiences of the South Asian American Sunnis have helped shape the spatial and visual characteristics of mosques in Greater Houston through cultural syncretism.
