About Hugo Geerts
My studies in theoretical physics and medicine together with a hands-on career in pharmaceutical drug Discovery & Development have enabled me to develop a totally novel innovative approach to Quantitative Systems Pharmacology computer-based drug development. During my work at the Janssen Research Foundation under the mentorship of the best drug hunter in history, Dr. Paul Janssen, I have learned to overcome conceptual barriers between basic and clinical research and get an excellent mastery of Translational Medicine in CNS diseases. I was involved in the pharmacology and the clinical development of galantamine for Alzheimer’s disease, while at the same time leading a research team in targets of tangle pathology. Since 2001 I have devoted my career to developing mechanism-based computer models of biophysically realistic networks with a special emphasis on making these results actionable for CNS drug R&D in an entrepreneurial spirit in a small bio-informatics company. I strongly believe that re-engineering drug discovery and development by refocusing on circuits and their emergent properties rather than single targets can make a positive contribution to the successful development of new CNS drugs which address the unmet medical needs of many patients. Within the Alzheimer Association I have created a Professional Interest Association on ‘Big Data to Smart Data’, as my approach to Data Science is different from traditional bio-informatics in that it incorporates domain expertise to develop mechanism-based computer models with high predicatibility. Professional Experience - Drug Discovery and Development Research at Janssen Research Foundation in Alzheimer\'s disease - Assistant Professor at University of Pennsylvania - Development of computer-based mechanistic models of the brain, useful in Drug R&D for CNS disorders Specialities: Translational Medicine in CNS Disorders Drug Discovery Application of mathematical models to brain disorders and neuropharmacology
