ABOUT HUGH BLACK
Since acquiring Rubislaw Quarry in April 2010 with my close friend, the late Sandy Whyte, we were inspired by an increasing number of people who shared our vision to create a heritage centre to celebrate granite and the granite industry. Rubislaw Quarry is largely responsible for Aberdeen being known as \"The Granite City\" where more than 10 million tons of granite was quarried. Quarrying started in 1740 before closing in 1969, creating the largest man-made hole in Europe, if not the world! Our vision to build an \"iconic\" visitor centre to celebrate Aberdeen\'s granite heritage, took another step forward when our project was included in Aberdeen City Council\'s SIP (Strategic Infrastructure Plan) on the 31st October 2013. After lengthy discussions with Aberdeen City planners, we eventually received planning approval on Friday 11th December 2015, to build a unique and iconic visitor centre to celebrate Aberdeen\'s granite heritage and the granite industry that has been instrumental in shaping the \"Granite City\". We have received unanimous and growing public support for this project and the people of Aberdeen, together with successful individuals and businesses, will shortly be given the opportunity to help us make our vision a reality.
