After an expansive federal career which spanned over 17 years, with key leadership positions at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense, Huban A, Gowadia joined the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She first served as the Deputy Principal Associate Director for Programs at the lab\'s NIF & Photon Science Directorate, and is currently serving as the Principal Associate Director for Global Security. Prior to joining LLNL, Huban served as Deputy Administrator for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a title she held since May 2016. In that role, Huban was responsible for overseeing all day-to-day operations for this $7.6 billion agency with geographically-dispersed employees, in addition to furthering the core security mission of the TSA, which includes the protection of the 2 million+ travelers who pass daily through our nation’s airports.Widely-known as a deeply knowledgeable and collaborative change agent, Huban has dedicated her professional life to evolving and improving the polices and initiatives that protect the United States from both foreign and domestic terrorist attacks. Presidentially-appointed in 2012 to serve as the Director of the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), Huban led 300+ staff and managed an annual budget of $357 million across the critical development of cohesive, government-wide strategies for global nuclear threat detection and forensics capabilities.Huban’s background in mechanical and aerospace engineering gives her unique insights into the complex technical and operational aspects of national and homeland security programs. She has applied her exceptional expertise as Checkpoint Program Manager for the TSA in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 (which she has described as the most impactful event of her professional life), as a Senior Engineering Advisor for the Office of Systems Engineering & Development for the DHS Science & Technology Directorate, and in various key roles for the DNDO prior to being selected to lead and transform that Office.Huban earned her Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, and her Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Alabama.
