ABOUT HOSSAM AMER
Hossam Amer is currently a Staff Researcher at Huawei in the Ascend team. He also supervises students at the German University in Cairo (GUC) as an adjunct faculty member, maintaining an active role in mentoring and research collaboration.His research interests include Machine Translation, Language Modelling/Classification, Multimodal AI, On-Device AI, Video generation, Image Classification, Federated Learning, Large Language Models, and Image and Video Compression.Before joining Huawei, Hossam was a Senior Applied Scientist at Microsoft. Prior to that, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Multimedia Communications Lab at the University of Waterloo (UW), where he mentored several MSc and PhD students. He obtained his PhD from UW in the same lab, where he received the annual UW Teaching Award based on nominations from students and instructors and published in top-tier venues. He also served as the Chair of the ECE Graduate Student Association and completed a summer internship with Google’s Video team.Hossam earned his Master’s degree from the MET (CSEN) program at the GUC in collaboration with Intel Egypt Research Labs. He completed his bachelor project at the Laboratory of Multimedia Architectures at EPFL in Switzerland.He is committed to impactful research and continuous knowledge transfer through mentorship and collaboration. Hossam is also a strong believer in constantly transferring his knowledge to make a difference.
