My goal as an art educator is to teach artistic behaviors in a choice based environment. We have created a studio where the child is the artist and I am their assistant. Once friends learn how to care for materials in each center, they are invited to plan and choose what they would like to create. The centers in our studio include painting, drawing, collage, structure/cardboard, fibers, textile, clay, and jewelry. Most centers are composed of reuse and recycled materials. Artists in the studio are encouraged to create W.O.W. projects that take at least 2 classes to complete. Along their artistic journey to making their W.O.W. projects, friends are also reminded that we don’t always love everything that we make. It’s okay to take something apart once you create it because it is more about the process than the product. We find that this closely aligns with choices they’re making in their classroom environments. Each week, our artists enter the studio eager to see what awaits them and ready to use their creativity. The joy in the room is palpable and each week I’m inspired and growing alongside them in my artistic capabilities.
