ABOUT HOLLY MCLENNAN CIPR
I have been a communications specialist for more than a decade, working in variety public and private sector roles. My approach to communications is \'business first\' which means that I encourage those I\'m working with to take time to discuss their corporate aims and objectives before communications advice and support is given. It may sound simple, but all too often a communications solution is provided before the overall purpose of a project or activity is set out. I feel so strongly about communications being treated in this strategic way, that I wrote about it as part of my Diploma in 2020: https://pracademy.co.uk/insights/are-reputational-experts-failing-at-protecting-their-own-reputation/ I currently head up the imbedded Communications Team of the Marine Directorate of the Scottish Government, which is responsible for managing Scotland\'s seas. We provide specialist internal and external communications support as well as stakeholder engagement advice across the organisation, using our combined experience and expertise across public relations (PR), digital, social media, design, marketing and more. I previously oversaw internal and external communications at Food Standards Scotland, which required frequent engagement with the national media as well as crisis communications support for food incidents. In my time with the food safety and healthy eating organisation, I also supported a number of award-winning consumer campaigns and events such as the Royal Highland Show. My private-sector experience comes from three years with international marketing communications agency, Fifth Ring. This was a fast-paced, holistic introduction to the industry and moulded me into a passionate communications specialist after graduating with a BA (Hons) Degree in Communications with Public Relations. I joined Albyn School\'s Board of Governors in May 2021 on a voluntary basis to provide strategic advice and council on supporting the school achieve the best possible outcomes for all pupils. This is a role I thoroughly enjoy as both a Communications expert and fond former pupil.
