About Holly Geyer

Keep reading. Because this bio isn\'t actually about me. It\'s about you.It\'s about you coping in a world where opioids are now the #1 killer of adults <age 45. A world where fentanyl laces everything from internet herbal supplements to \'candy\' marketed to our 10 year olds. It\'s about you becoming the 1 in 5 adults who\'s lost someone to this epidemic. It\'s about you choosing uncontrolled pain over opioids because you fear what they will take from you if you take them.It\'s about you, your world, your family and your hope for change. Time to meet me. I\'m a Hospitalist and Addiction Medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic and I\'m committed to ending America\'s opioid crisis-together. I\'ve dedicated my life to educating the nation on opioid-related topics. As an inevitable patient, you have the right to know what I know about the safety and value of opioids. When I wrote the book,\'Ending the Crisis: Mayo Clinic\'s Guide to Opioid Addiction and Safe Opioid Use\' I wanted to empower you with a go-to manual to do just that. In my book and public speaking campaigns, I talk about-Understanding pain and when opioids do/don\'t work-Knowing how to use prescribed opioids safely-Learning what drives opioid addiction and opioid use disorder-Understanding the science and evidence behind the treatments used for opioid addiction-Recognizing how to stage an intervention well and prevent relapses-How to navigate identifying a treatment program and help taking the first step-Understanding the role friends and family can play in recoveryWe need to be advocating for the evidence-based healthcare policies that ensure quality, patient-focused pain and addiction treatment options. Before clinical medicine, I worked for years in the drug treatment industry. I get what works and whats missing. I\'ve served on the AZ Medical Association Legislative Committee and partnered on legislative opioid policy design. The healthcare sector helped drive this epidemic. We need to be \'all in\' on its solutions. I\'ve collaborated with the American Hospital Association (AHA) to offer national pain/addiction/opioid stewardship education for the US healthcare sector and helped medical societies such as the ASH and SHM educate their clinician bases.Let\'s study our problems! I\'ve authored more than 120 journal articles, book chapters and abstracts with a commitment to turning inspiration into exploration. Life-changing pain treatments are just around the corner. We just need time to get there.There\'s problems. There\'s hope. There\'s you and there\'s me. What can we do as \'we\'?
