ABOUT HENRY BARBER
I am assistant wheat breeder at KWS-UK with 3 years breeding experience, having completed a BBSRC DTP PIPS funded placement at KWS in 2016 before joining the wheat breeding team full time in 2017, having previously completed a PhD in crop science at the University of Reading. My daily roles and responsibilites include; being responsible for selections within the pedigree breeding programme, implementing R and D findings in to the breeding programme, implementation of genomic selection, plot observations and disease scoring, assisting the head breeder where needed in the UK and overseas. I have completed my PhD which investigated the influence of Rht and Ppd alleles on heat stress tolerance in wheat, their interaction with growth stage, performance of these alleles in the field within a Doubled Haploid population and the potential to improve crop model responses to heat stress using this data. My areas of interest include: plant breeding, crop science and research, crop physiology, crop agronomy, abiotic stresses, teaching and climate change impacts on future crop production.Publications: Barber HM, Lukac M, Simmonds J, Semenov M and Gooding M (2017). Temporally and genetically discrete periods of wheat sensitivity to high temperature. Front. Plant Sci. doi: Barber H. M, Carney J, Alghabari F. & Gooding M. J.(2015).
