About Hilmar Lapp
I work at the intersection of biology, data science, and software engineering, applying over two decades of cross-disciplinary experience to advance FAIR and Reproducible data, code, and ML models. My research program revolves around using AI and ML on extracting fully computable organismal trait data from unstructured data such as natural language text and images. I lead and collaborate on large-scale research initiatives including most recently the HDR Imageomics Institute, where I direct data and informatics infrastructure. The institute builds on results of the Phenoscape project, which pioneered machine reasoning and knowledge representation for organismal trait descriptions, and for which I was co-PI and PI. I also co-led Phyloreferencing, a project developing standards for machine-interpretable clade definitions.At the US National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent), I helped build community informatics capacity, co-founded Data Carpentry, now part of The Carpentries, and helped launch Dryad, the data repository for research publications. Before that, I spent a decade in building data and analytics infrastructure for functional genomics in the biopharmaceutical sector.
