About Hilary Duffy
My official job titles are photographer, teacher and trip leader. But, like many passionate, energetic, and curious people, I wear many hats. I am an educator, author, photographer, liaison, trouble shooter and collaborator. Working alongside my students and partnering with clients and local guides fills my soul. I strongly believe that immersion in a new culture uniquely influences us. This awareness stems from formative experiences living and working in Costa Rica and Cuba where I not only found my passion for visual storytelling and learning languages, but my calling to help others do the same. I design photography workshops that enable students to find and share their voice, and encourage participants to engage with local culture. It is some of the most rewarding work I do. A big part of my approach is building and sustaining strong, collaborative relationships based on mutual respect. Whether with my clients, my subjects, local guides, ESL students, or budding photographers, I strive to build rapport. No matter what official job title I hold, I’m known for thinking on my feet to solve a problem, taking advantage of serendipity, and improvising in the face of an obstacle. Some accomplishments: Publication of Hope & Dreams from Cuba © 2019, my first monograph on the Cuban people. Commencement speaker at Hartwick College 2017 graduation. Trained by The Young Center to act as a volunteer child advocate for immigrant children.
