About Hieu Lê
Hieu Lê is a first-generation college graduate, nonprofit founder, and education equity leader committed to expanding access to education and economic opportunity. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Empower-ED, a Tulsa-based nonprofit that supports low-income, first-generation, and historically marginalized students from high school through postsecondary education and into the workforce. As the son of a Vietnamese immigrant who arrived in the United States at age 10 without speaking English, Hieu experienced firsthand the challenges faced by students navigating education systems without adequate guidance or financial support. Despite these barriers, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees—an achievement that inspired him to build the support system he wished he had growing up.Through Empower-ED, Hieu has developed innovative, long-term programming that combines postsecondary advising, life skills development, career exposure, financial literacy, and college savings initiatives that allow students to build assets over time. His work emphasizes measurable outcomes, sustainable systems, and strong partnerships with schools, employers, and community organizations. In addition to his nonprofit leadership, Hieu serves as a Commissioner for the Asian American Commission, where he advocates for equitable policies, increased representation, and culturally responsive solutions that uplift Asian American communities and other underserved populations.Hieu’s work is grounded in a core belief: when we invest in people early and consistently, we can break cycles of poverty and empower individuals to build futures defined by stability, opportunity, and choice.
