Herbert “Herb” J. Vallier is an accomplished board director and executive with more than 30 years of leadership experience driving organizational strategy, workforce transformation, and enterprise governance across healthcare, consumer goods, and higher education sectors.He is the Founder of Caritas Seed Capital Funding, and most recently served as Executive Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of SmartHealth Solutions for Ascension (2013–2024), where he led workforce strategy, health plan operations, and HR oversight for a $28 billion national health system comprising associates and affiliated providers.Herb currently serves as a Board Director for Sullivan and Cotter Holdings, with committee appointments in Finance and Governance. His prior board service includes roles with Ascension Health (Vice Chair; Chair, Executive Compensation and Pension Committees), AMITA Health (Executive Compensation Committee), the Catholic Healthcare Audit Network, and Catholic Health Initiatives (Executive Compensation and Strategic Planning Committees).Earlier in his career, Herb held senior executive positions at Dignity Health, Catholic Health Initiatives, and Central Massachusetts Health Care, and served as Executive Vice President and CHRO at Revlon, Inc. He also held leadership roles at Harvard University and Shell Oil Company and served in the U.S. Air Force Chaplain’s Service and Social Actions Division.A strategic advisor on governance, human capital, and organizational culture, Herb has been a driving force in developing inclusive workplace strategies aligned with enterprise mission, values and consumer strategy. He contributed to national initiatives through the Catholic Health Association’s We Are Called Pledge Advisory Group and Diversity and Health Disparities Committee.Herb holds a bachelor’s degree in Personnel and Labor Relations from the University of Maryland, College Park, and completed the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.
