About Herbert Harris
Dr. Harris graduated from Georgetown University and then received his MD and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, and his psychiatric training at Yale University. After completion of his clinical training, he served as Senior Staff Fellow at the National Institute on Aging, where his research focused on the molecular biology of Alzheimer’s disease. He subsequently served as Chief of the Geriatric Psychopharmacology Program at the National Institute of Mental Health. While at NIMH, he contributed to several major public health initiatives in mental health research including Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, DSM-IV-TR, and the STAR*D study of treatment-resistant depression. He also served as scientific liaison to the Neuropharmacology Division of the FDA. Dr. Harris subsequently joined industry and has had more than a decade of experience in drug development at Merck, Cephalon, Vela Pharmaceuticals, GSK, and Jazz Pharmaceuticals. His experience included several international development programs in schizophrenia, depression, and fibromyalgia as well as preclinical research discovering new medicines for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Dr Harris served as Chief Medical Officer of Validus Pharmaceuticals where he was responsible for drug safety; clinical research and development; regulatory affairs; medical affairs; and compliance for several marketed products. Dr Harris Currently is in private practice in North Carolina.
