ABOUT HENRY QUANSAH AFFUL

I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. My research focuses on solid-state batteries, where I investigate mechanical deformation during electrochemical cycling. By elucidating deformation and failure mechanisms within individual cell components, my work aims to inform designs that resist cracking and short-circuiting, ultimately improving battery durability and cycle life. In addition to my battery research, I study the reduction of metal ores using microwave hydrogen plasmas, contributing to the development of more energy-efficient and sustainable materials processing routes. My doctoral research broadly examined deformation mechanisms in ceramics, including superelasticity, plasticity, and fracture across a wide temperature range. I bring extensive expertise in nanomechanical testing and advanced characterization techniques to evaluate the mechanical behavior of materials under diverse conditions.
