ABOUT HAL W.
Data Engineer with a background in Theoretical Physics and a stubborn preference for building things properly. Currently at Chubb Insurance, where I work across cloud-native data platforms on Azure, Databricks, PySpark, and SQL, turning business-critical problems into clean, reliable pipelines. I came to data engineering from physics because both disciplines reward the same instinct: resist the temptation to approximate, and keep asking what the system is actually doing. That mindset shapes how I approach everything from pipeline architecture to stakeholder conversations. The technical precision matters. So does the ability to explain it. My experience spans insurance, finance, and consulting. I\'ve designed ML pipelines, automated workflows, and built governance frameworks that actually hold up under pressure. I care about documentation, edge cases, and the kind of scalability that doesn\'t become someone else\'s problem in six months. Outside work, I run a small literary press called Long Form Press, build a daily literature app called The Daily Canon, and spend a suspicious amount of time in Richmond Park with a Wirehaired Vizsla called Japhy.
