Race to Space is an educational initiative and national propulsion competition, aiming to boost the UK space sector by providing school children and undergraduates with hands-on experience, designing, building and testing rocket propulsion hardware.It is the only event of its kind anywhere in the world, and is this year set to double in size, involving 35 teams and over 200 undergraduates from across the UK and Europe. Each university team supports multiple local schools through outreach work, who would otherwise not have the opportunity to compete. This creates the fully-connected pipeline of highly enthusiastic and diverse talent, required to grow the UK space sector.Alistair and I started the competition in 2022 when we were experiencing difficulty finding test facility access to test our own engine for Project SunFire (the engine department of Project Sunride). At the same time we were learning of a significant skill shortage in graduates who had hands on propulsion experience, and the effect this was having on the growing UK space industry, from our friends in the UK Space Propulsion Working Group. So we decided to do something about it and UK Race to Space was born!
