It is a great privilege for me to be working in such a successful department of such a well-regarded school. I have greatly enjoyed the variety of teaching opportunities this school has given me and am delighted with the understanding my employers have shown for my desire to embark on further research. The school’s ethos has allowed me to grow and feel at home as a teacher and I have very much enjoyed getting to know the students and other staff. I have embraced every opportunity for professional development to improve teaching and become more heavily involved in the pastoral and extra-curricular life of the school, including acting as DofE manager and leading trips to London, Sicily and Madagascar. In 2014 I took up the post of Careers Advisor, having acted in that capacity for much of the previous year. This is an area I feel extremely passionate about as students of the 21st century more than ever need to develop strong networking skills, build up portfolios of work and experience, and be educated about the key sectors of the future. The position has allowed me to expand the reach of Careers in the school, making creative use of the resources at my disposal to maximise impact: by engaging parents, alumni and employers in the classroom and at evening events we have been able to really get students interested in careers and to set them up for their futures. From 2018 I have been directing the school’s administration of the IB Diploma, leading me to become far more involved in programme delivery, pastoral care and curriculum design. Blending my skills as a research student with my close relationships with colleagues has meant that I can make effective use of IB training and documentation in the school and to build the self-direction in our students that the IB requires. This has been a highly rewarding area and a real joy to work across a number of departments to bring different school policy aims to fruition in the context of delivering a world-class Diploma.
