ABOUT TONY S. HENDERSON
Experienced traffic/transportation engineer with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), specializing in integrating transit safety into street operations. As a traffic engineer with extensive transit and safety knowledge, I am uniquely situated to serve as a key interface between the Streets, Safety, and Transit Divisions. I focus on integrating the Safety Management Systems (SMS) within the SFMTA and contribute to the development and implementation of the federally required Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).I am also experienced in organizational preparedness and operations during large-scale special events, serving as the agency lead for the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting and the upcoming 2025 NBA All-Star events. I will continue this work as the Bay Area prepares to host Super Bowl LX and the FIFA World Cup in 2026, applying lessons learned and supporting continued cross-agency coordination. My experience in organizational preparedness and operations began in March 2020, when I pivoted my work to serve in a senior role on a multidisciplinary team tasked with implementing employee protective measures while maintaining critical 24/7 transit service. This work was especially important in the early days of the pandemic, when our team supported nearly employees at a time when guidance was rapidly evolving and sometimes conflicted with earlier directives.I am a licensed Civil Engineer and Traffic Engineer by the State of California and hold certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE). Additionally, I have earned the Transit Safety and Security Program (TSSP) and Public Transportation Safety Certification Training Program (PTSCTP) certifications in both bus and rail from the USDOT Transportation Safety Institute (TSI).
