I am the author of my autobiography “The Imperfect JAG: Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman”. The Imperfect JAG chronicles my life, from neglected and abused childhood, through my bullied adolescence, discovering myself in high school and college, through my turbulent career as a civilian and military criminal litigator. Battling personal demons including alcoholism, depression, and PTSD, I found myself broken and on the verge of death — and through the support of my wife, I slayed those demons on the road to recovery, rebuilding my life as a sober, redeemed, husband and legal advocate, now spending my time helping other lawyers, judge advocates, and lawyers battle the same demons I once faced. I also write for my blog on topics related to military justice, soldier life, and recovery.

ABOUT WILL M. HELIXON

I have over 30 years of litigation and advocacy experience involving over 150 jury trials prosecuted to a verdict. Serving as both defense counsel and trial counsel, I have both prosecuted and defended cases ranging from premeditated murder to sexual assault to contract fraud. I have also trained counsel on both sides of the bar on litigation management, case preparation and pretrial litigation involving state and federal criminal law matters (UCMJ). I have provided legal counsel and legal guidance to commanders at all levels, both in garrison and while deployed overseas. I advised the senior management of a broker/dealer on various litigation (mediation, arbitration, and state court trials), compliance, and regulatory matters in the financial services industry (FINRA). I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army JAG Corps in August 2022. My current practice focuses on assisting service members facing career-altering actions initiated by the military. Nearly 60% of my practice involves advising clients on legal actions resulting from alcohol-related misconduct.I am active in the alcohol and substance abuse recovery community, volunteering with local and in-patient treatment programs that assist active-duty and veteran service members battling alcohol and drug addiction.
