The British Society of Master Glass Painters, founded in 1921, is Britain\'s only organization devoted exclusively to the art and craft of stained glass. From the outset, its chief objectives have been to promote and encourage high standards in the art and craft of stained glass painting and staining, to act as a locus for the exchange of information and ideas within the stained glass craft and to preserve the invaluable stained glass heritage of Britain.

ABOUT HELEN WHITTAKER

Helen Whittaker MBE is Creative Director of Barley Studio, where all work is carried out in-house in the purpose-built Studio in York. She has over 30 years of experience in stained glass creation and restoration painting, and has completed more than 100 commissions for ecclesiastical, secular and domestic buildings in the UK and internationally.Helen was selected to help promote the United Kingdom Government’s international ‘GREAT Britain’ campaign to showcase British talent in the creative sector. In 2024 she was awarded an MBE \'for services to the creation and conservation of stained and architectural glass art\' in the King’s Birthday Honours.Using her knowledge, experience and skills in a wide range of artistic techniques, Helen has collaborated with two Royal Academists, David Hockney and Hughie O’Donoghue, to create windows for Westminster Abbey. Helen is Upper Warden to the Court of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers & Painters of Glass, a Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, a Brother of the Art Workers Guild and an Honorary Craftsperson Member of the Company of Merchant Taylors of York. She is a Craft Scholar of the Prince’s Foundation (now the King’s Foundation), having received the prestigious Hancock Medal for High Achievement.Helen actively promotes the art and craft of stained glass to a variety of audiences, and has appeared in several television programmes about her work. As Head Judge she supported the “Reflections of the Lord Mayor” roundel competition. For the Glaziers Charity (part of The Worshipful Company of Glaziers & Painters of Glass) Helen chaired the Stevens Architectural Glass Competition and supports the Glaziers Education Partnership.
