ABOUT HECTOR SANTIAGO
Special Education Supervisor within the Milwaukee Public Schools district. While completing my Bachelors degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, I traveled to the Middle East to conduct a study on the refugee status of Syrians and Palestinians residing in Lebanon. While in Tyre, Lebanon I volunteered with the Non-governmental Organizations, Beit Atfal Assumoud and Learning for the Empowerment and Advancement of Palestinians (LEAP). During my service, I taught English to Syrain as well as Palestinian refuges that were unable to enter secondary education as a result of not attaining a proficient score on the Brevet exam, an examination solely administered in English and French. After several students were able to move their comprehension levels from beginner to intermediate, I returned to the states to complete my degree, share my findings, and attain a job as a paraprofessional in a local high school.I served as a paraprofessional for three years at The Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before entering a post-graduate program to attain my teaching license as well as my masters degree in Education. Throughout that time, I continued to teach at Bradley Tech before attaining a teaching position at Rufus King International High School. As a Special Education teacher, I have primarily taught students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Emotional Behavior Disabilities (EBD), placements that require a great deal of compassion and understanding. Currently, I have attained my Director of Special Education and Pupil Services licensure as a means of becoming a leader as well as champion to students with disabilities on a district level. As a leader I seek to help create as well as cultivate a harmonious learning environment for staff, students, parents, and administration. I will continue the fight for restorative and inclusionary practices for students seemingly within the periphery. I currently serve as a Special Education Supervisor within the Milwaukee Public Schools district.
