TMC\'s predecessor was the Desert Sanatorium, which was founded in the 1920s as a tuberculosis treatment center. Due to the Great Depression and the shortage of nurses during World War II, the sanatorium closed in 1943. With the support of the community, the Desert Sanatorium was transformed into the Tucson Medical Center in 1944 and officially began operations.
