About Heather Appel
Senior Communications Manager at the Oakland Literacy Coalition, which brings people together so that all Oakland kids learn and love to read. I previously managed communications at the Partnership for Working Families (now PowerSwitch Action), a national network of 20 organizations who are building powerful, governing coalitions with a grassroots base of leaders to advance a vision of just, sustainable, and democratic cities rooted in economic, racial and gender justice. Leading up to that, I spent 8 years leading communications at CIR/SEIU Healthcare, a union representing over resident physicians around the country. Prior to joining CIR, I was a reporter at the Herald News in Passaic County, NJ. In my time at the Herald News, I covered several municipal beats, education and several other issues, including labor, immigration, and disability issues. I covered the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO and won the 2008 Robert P. Kelly Award for reporting and writing, an honor awarded by the New Jersey Press Association to the best first-year journalist.I earned a Master\'s Degree at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in 2007. I\'m now based in Oakland, CA, where I\'m active with Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ Bay Area), the East Bay Meditation Center, and Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders.
