ABOUT HEATHER WHALEN

As an architect at ESG Architecture & Design, I am passionate about creating experiences. Restaurants, hotels, and the guests who enjoy them are my specialty. I manage hospitality projects of all scales. I grew up in small town Iowa, interested in art and math, fascinated with cities and the rich experience of life they offer. I eventually became a city girl, but I didn’t shed my hometown values. My years of experience working in architecture firms has taught me the following things about myself: I don’t quit. I’m always looking for a more efficient way, and I love it when a genius idea comes from brainstorming! My desk isn’t always organized, but my priorities are. Honesty is hands-down the only way to go. It sometimes takes others to point out what you can accomplish before you’re able to see it for yourself. I’m fully invested, completely engaged, and I come to each project with my whole self. I care what others think of me. I hate missing an amazing opportunity! Every project has a unique interesting potential and value to pursue. Working with wonderful people makes everything better. Having fun is seriously essential. The big picture is my jam. Architecture is a lens with which to view the world- not just a profession. It is a practice of lifelong learning and remaining open-minded. Design is an iterative process, shaped by a collaborative team. I find the process and the people that make up each unique project fascinating.
