I teach liberal arts courses in diversity, intercultural competency and vocation. Core II - Africa explores culture and history of Africa as well as the lives of refugee and immigrant populations through a combination of readings, interviews, and community engagement. Students have immersed themselves in diverse communities and worked in partnership with organizations like Zion Lutheran Church, pi 515, Najah Community Center and Viking Kids Club, opening their eyes to the resilience of New Iowans and the struggles of local organizations to meet the needs of diverse populations. I encourage a spirit of inquiry as students pursue their research; beyond connecting it to their major, I guide them on their deeper quest for meaning and lifelong learning so they may shed common stereotypes of African and immigrant communities and identify concrete ways to create more inclusive forms of global leadership.
