About Heather Bernet

Twenty years experience working with teens in the field of tobacco-control and prevention. Proficient in event planning and presentation development. Extensive training and experience in community mobilization and policy change. Over the past five years I have led the planning for an annual Statewide Youth Summit that brings together over 150 youth and 50 adults. Also over the past two years I have organized a \"Coordinator Camp\" for those of us working with youth in the New York State Reality Check program. The purpose of this is to improve our skills and share resources. Current goals are to work within the Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer County area in Central New York to educate and mobilize the community regarding the impact of tobacco marketing in stores and educate decision makers regarding policy changes to protect children from tobacco marketing. The youth whom I work closely have been named the recipients of the 2012 Group Youth Advocates of the Year Award from the National Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. The group I work with also had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Youth Leadership Institute with Legacy for Health in Washington, DC and in 2018 youth leaders actively participate in the Truth Initiative\'s training on tobacco in the media, conducted Capital Hill visits and one of our local youth leaders was a speaker for a panel discussion regarding this topic. Specialties: Planning and Developing projects and initiatives to educate and mobilize communities on tobacco issue in order to move communities toward policy changes regarding tobacco marketing in stores and tobacco imagery in media that youth use. Skilled in developing and carrying out events, trainings, and workshops. Extensive knowledge in working with teens in leadership development and community activism. Extensive knowledge of tobacco industry advertising and marketing specifically targeted at teens.
