ABOUT HAYLEIGH AST
As a practicing naturopathic doctor and post-doctoral research fellow at Oregon Health & Science Univeristy, my work in the gut-brain-immune axis strives to identify biological signatuers which will inform clinical practice and treatment. My research is inspired by my clinical work in pediatric neurodevelopmental medicine. At present, I have found that children who have responded to micronutrients (vitamins and mineral supplement) had a significantly different gut microbiome compared to children who have not which may relate butyrate-producing bacteria and lower inflammatory markers. Future directions include response to micronutrients versus stimulant medications and defining the hromonal interactions within the gut-brain-immune axis which disproportionately impacts children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Partnerships and collaborations I search for include those who share my same passion for empowering this population of children and those that can expand my knowledge in omics analysis to advance fecal metagenomics understanding in pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders.
