ABOUT HAYDEN STORTS
As a fourth-year biological science scholar studying microbiology, I have explored the areas of immunology, pathogenesis, microbial genetics, virology, physiology, and biochemistry. I have utilized the scholars program to attend seminars on current research and development in numerous biological sciences fields. Aside from my time as a student, I have supported research throughout my time at The Ohio State University. As a researcher, I have dived into the complexities of cancer biology and genetics. I continue to investigate the STING/cGAS pathway, a cytosolic dna sensing pathway with a central role in anti-tumor immunity. I have coauthored 5 manuscripts, exploring this pathway searching for strategies to develop effective colorectal cancer treatments. Currently, I support a clinical trial studying drugs Riluzole, mFOLFOX6, and Bevacizumab in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. I have presented my research at an Honors/Scholars panel to serve as a resource for incoming freshman and those interested in participating in research. I have also received a STEP fellowship grant for my research and presented at the biannual STEP Expo. During an internship with Nestle the summer before my senior year, I applied my knowledge of microbial pathogens as I worked with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, Listeria Monocytogenes, Salmonella typi, and Chronobacter. My department of biochemistry and special investigations took on unique and difficult projects utilizing these pathogens. I presented a summation of my projects at the end of the internship.
