ABOUT SETH COLLINGS HAWKINS

Emergency physician with dual board certifications in emergency medicine and EMS and specialization in wilderness EMS. Writer. Anthropologist. Father. I am the editor of the textbook Wilderness EMS (Wolters-Kluwer 2018 and coming out in second edition with Cambridge University Press in 2025), co-author of Vertical Medicine: Wilderness Medicine for Climbers, Trekkers, and Alpinists (W.W. Norton 2017), co-editor of the second edition of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine (Cambridge University Press 2025), and editor-at-large with Wilderness Medicine Magazine (Wilderness Medical Society).I\'m the owner of Hawk Ventures and the Board Chair of the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team. I serve as medical advisor for the Student Conservation Association and the NC Outward Bound School, and the medical director of the National Association for Search & Rescue, NC State Parks, Landmark Learning, the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team, Starfish Aquatics Institute, and three wildland firefighting medical support teams: Aerie Backcountry Medicine, Timberline Medical, and Minuteman EMS. I also serve as the local emergency medical advisor (LEMA—federal term for medical director) of all national forests and wilderness areas in NC for the US Forest Service, and as LEMA for the Cape Lookout National Seashore and the Outer Banks Group (Cape Hatteras and associated federal sites) for the National Park Service. I\'m the associate medical director of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians EMS system and StarGuard ELITE. I founded the Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine in 2007 and currently serve as its Board Chair. Academically, I serve on the faculty of Wake Forest University School of Medicine\'s Department of Emergency Medicine as an associate professor and as associate director of the Wake Forest Wilderness Medicine Fellowship.
