ABOUT HATEM ABOU-ZEID
I am an Associate Professor and Schulich Industry Research Chair in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary, where I work at the intersection of AI, 6G, and Brain Computer Interfaces. My research group explores how advanced AI and foundation models can make future wireless systems more intelligent and adaptive. We\'ve been among the first to develop foundation models that learn directly from raw IQ signals, and models that jointly enable wireless sensing, localization, and communication. I enjoy sharing research through talks, and I\'ve recently had the privilege of giving over 10 invited talks at international venues on foundation models and trustworthy AI for 6G - a topic I believe has the potential to transform current networking technologies.Before joining academia, I spent seven exciting years in industry at Ericsson and Cisco, working on cutting-edge communication systems - spanning both novel communication concepts and developing production-grade networking solutions. That work led to 20 patents and technologies that supported intelligent VR traffic scheduling, reinforcement learning for interference mitigation, and 4G/5G spectrum sharing. Many of these techniques were later deployed in service provider networks worldwide. Seeing those ideas go from concept to deployment was one of the most rewarding parts of my career.I’ve always believed in bridging industry and academia to drive innovation. I am a strong advocate for industry–university collaboration and applied research. At Ericsson, I helped create partnerships worth over $3.5M, involving more than 25 students, and I continue this collaborative spirit at UCalgary. Teaching and mentoring are some of the best parts of my job.
