IN 2011 joined Board Friends of ALYN. Since 2004 I have been a rider and fund raiser for ALYN, MORE IMPORTANTLY, learned, in that first year, in 2004, that by reaching out to our communities, our friends, families and colleagues, we could put our energy into projects which make the world a better and safer place. We could change lives, and in doing so, change our own.As a bicyclist, I immediately fell in love with the concept of hundreds of cyclists coming from around the world, having made a commitment to their own fund raising, to show support for a pediatric and adolescent rehabilitation hospital which could, with our efforts, provide superlative medical care, well above the standard of care available with just insurance or other resources.Prior Volunteer Servicen 2002 I served as a volunteer with the IDF, the Israel Defense Forces, for three weeks, assuming jobs to free reservists who could then be assigned to more critical tasks. For two of those weeks I worked on a base which prepared paratrooper candidates for their wings, which they earned by training for their qualifying jumps in the Israeli desert. We had the opportunity to attend the dawn jump exercises at dawn one morning, watching planes circle and then drop their troops who then had to aim for designated targets. It\'s one thing to see this in an old black and white film, and quite spectacular to be directly below. While we did \"clean\" post-jump parachutes the intricate practice of packing was left to a crew of young women soldiers who did so with absolute professionalism.The eye-opening aspect of this was that the general Israeli population, at that time, felt under siege and that it was unsafe to attend unguarded open-air restaurants. But there remained an open-minded sense that there was a future with their neighbors, the Palestinians, and we can all hope that this comes to fruition at some time in our lifetimes.

ABOUT HARVEY GRAD
I\'ve practiced law for over 42 years. My aspiration is to have a positive personal relationship with my clients. Law is an imprecise science, really more of an art, and an informed client is better equipped to make the best choices based on counseling and advocacy options. I hope to continue to have a strong, positive relationship with the Seattle area bicycling community and to continue my participation in charitable causes, such as the annual Wheels of Love (Israel) which funds pediatric and adolescent rehabilitation at the ALYN hospital, Jerusalem.
