ABOUT HARRY VERWAYEN
ABOUT ME I’m the Director General of the Europeana Foundation which operates the common European data space for cultural heritage. At Europeana, I work with museums, libraries, archives, policymakers, and technologists across Europe to support digital transformation and to ensure that digitised cultural collections remain accessible and reusable as public resources. A central theme in my work is how AI reshapes collective memory, knowledge production, and cultural plurality, and what it means to treat information as a public good rather than a proprietary asset. My background is rooted in both the cultural and business sectors. Before Europeana, I worked at Kennisland, a think tank in Amsterdam, focusing on business model innovation for cultural institutions. Earlier, I spent over ten years in academic publishing. I hold an MA in History from Leiden University and completed several executive programmes at Nyenrode Business University.Alongside my work, I’ve had the pleasure of contributing to boards and advisory groups including AI4LAM, Time Machine Organisation, European Heritage Awards, and the Khalili Foundation.
