As the dean of one of the country’s most prestigious health professions schools, I’m helping to shape the future of healthcare by first listening to community and business leaders. This approach challenges traditional university practices, which have a reputation for telling the community what it needs, instead of listening to its needs. WHO I AM: • Dean and leader of UAB SHP, a nationally ranked school training everyone in the medical field except doctors and nurses • Graduate of Harvard University’s Management and Leadership in Education and Management Development programs • Professor/facilitator at the UAB Center for Healthcare Management and Leadership’s Executive Program • Nationally sought-after healthcare and leadership presenter • Co-chair of the UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative Governing Board • Editorial board member for the Journal of Allied Health, the publication of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED: • Led 4 UAB SHP programs to be ranked by U.S. News & World Report • Expanded UAB SHP facilities by building new floors outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, laboratories and learning spaces • Acquired research funding approaching $14 million • Served as principal investigator for over $1 million in awarded grants • Co-founded UAB’s leadership development program (BLAZE) • Authored and published research articles in 35 publications
