ABOUT HALLEY OBYRNE
Facilities Development Project Manager working to enhance and modernize our public health system and its many facilities and bring lasting, long term value to clinical care providers, staff, patients and ultimately the taxpayer.Previously a mechanical engineer with a combination of design/consulting, construction and facility management/development experience with exposure to a wide variety of building types, systems and processes, from conception to completion. Involvement in these different areas had helped me gain an appreciation for the importance of sound, practical and cost-effective designs and the impact of these designs on the construction and life cycle operation of buildings.I have always been passionate about the environment and sustainability and am compelled to make a positive contribution through my career. Addressing one of the biggest challenges of our time can be done by tackling mechanical systems in buildings: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 40% of energy consumed in the U.S. is by buildings. Further to that, 35% of that energy is gobbled up by mechanical systems. That indicates nearly 15% of energy consumed is by the heating and cooling systems, primarily mechanisms of conveying heat, air and water (chillers, boilers, pumps and fans), and by extension this reflects the industrialized world. It is certainly an area that presents a huge opportunity to reduce our human footprint and I see the work that I do through this lens. The past decade has allowed me to gain skills in the design, construction, project management and commissioning of buildings in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto among many other project locations across western Canada, with a focus on health care facilities in the latter part of my consulting experience.
