More than children in Metro Atlanta are food insecure, facing the risk of hunger due to unpredictable access to meals. During the week, most of them receive breakfast and lunch at school at little or no cost - a true lifeline for food-insecure children. But for some, the school lunch on Friday is the last good meal they will get until they return to school on Monday. Sadly, for tens of thousands of at-risk children in Metro Atlanta, Saturday and Sunday mean going hungry. Backpack Buddies of Metro Atlanta is working to change this reality for food-insecure children and families, offering students access to healthy meals on weekends through our Weekend Feeding Program. Backpack Buddies started in 2017 with a group of volunteers who gathered each week to pack food for children facing hunger on the weekends when they did not have access to school meals. These dedicated volunteers partnered with one local elementary school to provide nutritious meals and snacks for children to take home in their backpacks each Friday afternoon. Backpack Buddies quickly expanded, nourishing dozens of students every weekend across Atlanta. Incorporated in 2022, Backpack Buddies completed its inaugural 20••••23 school year by feeding roughly 800 children every week across 27 schools and established a headquarters with warehouse space. With the support of hundreds of volunteers (referred to as Community Buddies) at nearly 40 churches, synagogues, and other community organizations, we are now feeding 2,500 children each weekend across 50 Metro Atlanta Title 1 schools by providing them a nutritious weekend food bag of 6 meals. As of April, 2025, BPBMA reached a huge milestone - serving our 1 MILLIONTH MEAL!
