ABOUT TAHMID AL HAFIZ
Hafiz is recent graduate from the Bachelor’s degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering programme at the University of Alberta. Amongst his peers, Hafiz is known as a strong advocate for nature and wildlife conservation. His aim is to promote widespread implementation of sustainable design and eco-friendly engineering methods on a global scale. Hafiz takes a strong interest in student governance and leadership; and thereby has actively engaged in different student and community organizations throughout his journey at the UofA. Between 2022-23, he served as the Co-President and Board of Directors’ Chair of the Engineering Students’ Society (ESS) — the faculty association that advocates for the 4900 undergraduate engineering students on campus. As a part of his role as the ESS Co-President, he is responsible for overseeing this organization of 200+ volunteers, managing a budget, while acting as the focal point of connection with the Faculty and Central Admin. He also served as an elected representative to the university’s highest academic decision making body: the General Faculties Council (GFC) for 2 consecutive terms. In addition to that, Hafiz served as a Senator on the University of Alberta Senate where he played a role in contributing to a number of initiatives, including the development of University of Alberta Senate Strategic Plan (2021-25).Aside from student governance, Hafiz also nurtures a deep interest in entrepreneurship & innovation. He was one of the very first recipients of the UASU’s SCF Green Fund, which he used to kickstart ‘Pluvio’ — an all natural, sustainable dishwashing soap distributed in a unique, biodegradable paper bottle. ‘Pluvio’ dish soap was sold in 3 stores across Edmonton, and received acclaim from local media outlets and the city’s startup community back in November 2021. Hafiz is also the CEO and one of the co-founders of ‘eevee’, a peer2peer equipment rental platform scheduled to launch in the summer of 2023. He received the prestigious ‘Dyan and Karyn Triffo Awards for Innovation’ for ‘eevee’ in 2022. He remains affiliated with notable business incubators such as the League of Innovators, Edmonton Unlimited etc. with this exciting venture.Hafiz regularly participated in intra-UofA and national pitch/case competitions. He was a part of the team that represented the University of Alberta at the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) 2022 in Halifax, NS and secured 2nd place nationally. He has raised more than in pre-seed funding for his start-ups till date.
