About Guy Haycock

Seeing the sparkle in a customer’s eyes when they realize what technology can do for their specific business is the thing that keeps me coming back for more. Whether I’m in a marketing or engineering team, is a question of the particular role. I love helping customers realize their full potential. I do this by building and delivering break-through products/services. Across a range of marketing and engineering roles, I’ve amassed a wide range of skills and experience. I’ve lead business strategy/SKUs; technical product management; product reviews; market research; inbound and outbound marketing.I’m currently leading global product planning for Azure Data Lake at Microsoft. My career started with an engineering certification at the beginning of the microprocessor revolution gaining a New Zealand certificate in Digital Electronics and Design. I started with systems engineering, managing a series of Data General minicomputers across several of New Zealand\'s large technical institutes (US community college equivalents). This work led me to joining Data General, helping deployment of office automation suite in the New Zealand parliament.Shifting from engineering to marketing, I built my profile as a leading product manager releasing several generations of Data General MV minicomputers, followed by Data Generals\'s transition to Unix with AViiONs, and finally launching NeXT in New Zealand. As Microsoft started its Windows NT journey, I joined as the country product manager for Windows, Windows NT, Windows Server and the BackOffice suite of products. Fast forward to the turn of the century and relocation to Seattle, my journey continues and connects with today. After a decade of Microsoft marketing roles, I’ve completed the circle and continue after a series of program management roles in Azure engineering.Outside of Microsoft, I compete in triathlons and teach snowboarding which links back to the motivation of helping others develop.

Experience

  1. Principal Program Manager

    Microsoft

Dec 2016 — Present · Redmond, WA, US

Brought in to help the Azure Data Lake team focus on present and future customer needs and drive product sales which grew 300% during my time with the team (Dec 20••••18) in part due to initiatives like:• Implemented new policy around overage rates for commitment package clients (who buy in bulk). Led to this client base growing from just 5% of service consumption to 25%. Resulted in a net 13x increase in revenue from this cohort.• Became the go-to person for many Data Lake clients. Saw these interactions as an opportunity to build rapport and garner informal qualitative feedback on the product which informed my overarching mandate to reduce investment and reorient towards open-source solutions.
