About Luisa G.

I\'m from Bogota, Colombia, born and raised. I moved to the United States when I was 13 years old, and I am every day thankful that I am able to achieve more in my life that I could have ever imagined at that age. My culture and my upbringing taught me to be humble, to appreciate effort, and not to take time for granted. I grew up speaking Spanish in a low-middle class community. Nobody in my household spoke English, and no one was willing to step out of their boundaries to make an effort so it was up to me to set a goal, support my family, and move forward. At 13 knowing I had to grow up a little faster to be better was tough. Learning to ignore judgement for trying to be better took a lot of trial and error. It takes courage to stand up for yourself, to push yourself outside of the comfort zone, to admit failure is inevitable but understand that we have to fail to learn. It is my belief that communication is the most powerful quality a human can possess. My journey was about learning to communicate in a different language, but the same ideals are equally applicable when we speak the same language – it is not just about the words we use, but how we use them, our tone, our expressions, and the message we are trying to convey. I\'ve visited approximately 50 countries and I have attempted to learn various languages – Korean, French, Italian, Russian – none of these I speak fluently, but I am always willing to learn new things in order to make more meaningful connections and have more rewarding interactions with humans around the globe. I have a high degree of respect for all cultures, and will continue to make efforts to educate myself in order to create a positive and knowledgeable environment for me and those around me. A confident person, in my experience, shares information comfortably with an open mind, admits failure, re-evaluates new perspectives, accepts new or evolving knowledge in order to adapt to modern ways of thinking.
