ABOUT GUI DE AZEVEDO

It is hard to pinpoint exactly when I knew I wanted to be involved in architecture and building, but my interests led me to major in architecture in college, where my eyes were really opened to the importance of art and design. I owe a lot to my education, where I had the opportunities to learn in a creative environment, and even lucky enough to travel and see incredible architecture all over the world. And although the hours were “endless”, and course load was difficult – the collaboration within the college studio environment was an amazing experience. Needless to say, I have tremendous respect for all designers and the dedication they put into their work.Once I finished my graduate year, with a construction management co-op completed, I realized that a career in architecture was not quite what I wanted to pursue. A tough realization at that time, but it showed me that the purpose of my studies in college was not to prepare me for the workforce. Rather, it was to help me understand the mindset of an architectural designer. No matter where I applied myself with work, I knew I could bring this with me, and that nothing was lost in continuing to pursue a different path, in construction – project management.What actually surprised me about construction, was just how willing everyone was to step in, help out, and offer a teaching moment. If only you can humble yourself enough to ask questions. I don’t know why it surprised me, but I found I had made some presumptions about the construction industry, and I was wrong. So I had to dive in and try to learn as much as possible.At the end of the day, the construction industry is all about fostering relationships - the project teams made up of coworkers, mentors, clients, designers, and contractors. This, on top of my passion for the craft and design that goes into a project, is what pushes me to work my hardest at what I do.
