After covering for a maternity leave post at Cancer Research UK, I took on a new role as a senior media relations officer in the charity\'s Science Media team. In this role, I respond to enquiries from journalists across the UK regarding Cancer Research UK\'s research portfolio across universities and research institutes. I work with Cancer Research UK-funded scientists to promote their research in the media, from writing press releases to building pitches for features and op-ed articles about discoveries made by researchers funded by Cancer Research UK. I also lead on communications planning and proactive communications activity for Cancer Research UK\'s science policy work, influencing government on policies to drive recovery of clinical research from COVID-19 and pursue policies to make the UK the best place in the world to carry out cancer research.

ABOUT GRAEME SNEDDON
I have 10 years\' experience as a communications, public relations and public affairs professional, specialising in science and political communication. I have a flair for telling interesting stories about scientific research and translating complex concepts into media-friendly soundbites and easily understandable information for non-scientific audiences. My experience within communications includes media relations, social media and digital communications, crisis and reputation management. I have a long track record of devising, drafting and implementing communications plans which secure positive media coverage for my employers and mitigate or prevent negative stories which pose a risk to my employers’ reputation. In previous roles working for senior SNP politicians, that has included providing effective, well-evidenced political advice which helps them to get elected to office and then use the time they hold office to champion policies and causes of interest to them and their constituents. Well-developed project and people management skills, including managing casework, developing and implementing campaign plans on behalf of MPs, MSPs and election candidates and running political offices.6. Good IT skills, especially with software for political campaign purposes (e.g. NationBuilder) and statistical software (e.g. R, MATLAB).7. Strong public speaking and presentation skills.8. Broad understanding of quantitative and qualitative research techniques and their application for political contexts (e.g. situation analysis, public opinion research, analysis of voter data and briefing for parliamentary debates).9. Proficient in website development and social media management tools, including WordPress & Buffer.
