ABOUT GRISELDA CHAPA SCD

Griselda Chapa is an epidemiologist with 30 years of health care experience.As an undergraduate, she began her career in health care working in hospitals and a French travel insurance company. After receiving an MPH, she became the executive director of a nonprofit where she wrote grants raising funds to design, implement, and evaluate community based health education programs. Notable grants received include a NIDA grant to study heroin use among Mexican American Vietnam veterans and a million dollar grant from the Public Health Service to teach medical Spanish and cross cultural health issues to FQHC employees across the country. In 1991, she received an NIH fellowship to study epidemiology at Yale. After completing her doctoral exams, she was recruited by a national insurer. Since then she has worked as director of research in a variety of settings including Taft Hartley Funds, correctional health systems, hospital based health plans, managed care and disease management companies. Over the past two decades, she has been adjunct faculty at various universities and for 10 years she taught a field studies course in cultural epidemiology in Central America.In 2001, she was invited by the Office of Minority Health and the Dept. of Health and Human Services to work on the National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care. This document cemented the need to address language and cultural issues that could affect quality of health care. Her dissertation examined diabetes outcomes in immigrant populations in Alameda County, CA.She has served as a reviewer to the CDC, the J of Men\'s Health, the American J of Managed Care, Health Services Research, and the Web Health Awards.She teaches for the City and State Universities of New York and the does consulting.
