In this role, I work on applied research subjects at the intersection between Renewable Energy, AI and Data Processing within an industrial collaboration on applications that facilitate the energy transition through monitoring of hydropower plants. My key research activities span:• Machine-learning-based monitoring of hydro-turbines from routinely available SCADA/DCS data and expert-engineered features withF1-score of over 96%• Machine-learning-assisted generation of operation statistics necessary for fatigue life estimation and predictive maintenance of hydroturbines.• Development of virtual sensors for sensing expensive or difficult-to-obtain measurements on critical parts of a hydro turbine.• Technical communication of research results in scientific conferences and a dissertation.

ABOUT GREGORY AHUNGWA

I am a software and research engineer with over 7 years of hands-on experience in developing and designing innovative hardware, software, and data-driven solutions for research, management, and industrial applications. Throughout my professional journey in the Educational, Renewable Energy, and Oil and Gas sectors, I have cultivated a robust blend of competencies in Data Science and Data Engineering. I am proficient in managing the data engineering life cycle, from data sources like IoT devices and sensors to data consumers such as data scientists, data analysts, and stakeholders. I manage ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) workloads and design complex data pipelines. I designed and implemented advanced Machine Learning solutions for predictive maintenance of a hydro turbine with a prediction accuracy of 99%. I also spearheaded the development of a Salary Breakdown Estimator using Excel with advanced VBA scripting, reducing the salary negotiation time for 100 newly hired engineers by over 80%.My career interests span Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Deep Learning, and Software Development.
