ABOUT GRAY COX

Gray Cox\'s most recent publication is SMARTER PLANET OR WISER EARTH? DIALOGUE AND COLLABORATION IN THE ERA OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. HE is a professor of philosophy, peace studies and language learning at College of the Atlantic who has led the development of international studies and languages at the College and a number of study abroad programs in Mexico and France. He has written a wide variety of papers and three other books: THE WAYS OF PEACE: A PHILOSOPHY OF PEACE AS ACTION (Paulist Press 1986) and THE WILL AT THE CROSSROADS: A RECONSTRUCTION OF KANT’S MORAL PHILOSOPHY (University Press of America, 1983) and, most recently, A QUAKER APPROACH TO RESEARCH: COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE AND COMMUNAL DISCERNMENT (Quaker Institute for the Future, 2014). He was Principal Investigator on an NSF funded project in sustainability studies dealing with: “Modern Consumer Families and Self-Reliant, Maine Yankees: Two Cultures of Residential Heating”. In recent years his research and conference presentations have focused on the intersections between trends in artificial intelligence, the Singularity, National Security and developments in conflict resolution approaches to ethics and social change, and Gandhian satyagraha. Recent articles include, for instance, “Gandhi’s Dialogical Truth Force” and “Reframing Ethical Theory, Pedagogy, and Legislation to Bias Open Source AGI Towards Friendliness and Wisdom” (available online at http://jetpress.org/v25.2/cox.htm). He is a founding member and current clerk of the Quaker Institute for the Future and hosted a series of its Summer Research Seminars He is a singer/songwriter who plays bones and guitar and has done several albums of original music in English, Spanish and French, available at: https://graycox.bandcamp.com. His studies included a B.A. at Wesleyan University, 1974, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy, at Vanderbilt University, 1981.
