About Grant S.

I am asked why I chose Occupational Therapy. After all, most of my work experience was in hospitality and education, but everything you\'ve done before has elements of what you do now. Occupational Therapy incorporates my love for making people enjoy life, something I valued from my time working in the hospitality industry. Occupational Therapy incorporates my enjoyment for guiding and teaching others. I believe that this career path has followed me without my notice. I had the unique experience of teaching my older brother, with his own unique disabilities, how to make a transaction, use the bus, and simply how to cook an egg if he was hungry. He doesn\'t do much of this now, but sometimes he still offers to make me an egg, and he boasts about it. That is meaningful. When I came to embrace the choice to follow Occupational Therapy, my father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I left home to care for him in Hawaii, over a thousand miles away. By then I learned a fair amount from Occupational Therapists I shadowed and helped modify his environment, advocate on his behalf to doctors, and helped him adapt to his declining condition. He was a strong, independent man who would bike miles and miles a day, but was still happy with walking around the block with me in his wheelchair. Before he passed, he told me, “You should consider helping people like this as a career,” and I told him that is exactly what I plan to do.
