About Grant Fitzsimmons
I’m the Product Manager at the Specify Collections Consortium, where I work closely with natural history collection managers and researchers from around the world. My main focus is on ensuring customer success through outreach and community-building, while also providing user support and contributing to software development and data conversion.I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Information Systems from The University of Kansas School of Business. I’m passionate about technology, finance, and managing successful teams, and I love learning new things.Currently, I act as the main point of contact between Specify users and the development team, helping prioritize features and capabilities based on user needs. I keep an eye on market trends to ensure our products tackle real-world collections management challenges effectively.I have been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to support over 400 research collections, helping them manage their biological collection data in Specify. I handle technical inquiries and coordinate meetings and webinars to provide assistance and resolve issues as quickly as possible.I also manage cloud infrastructure across DigitalOcean, AWS, and DreamHost, overseeing more than 80 hosted instances of Specify 7 and related programs. I work with databases, cloud storage, web servers, and SSL certificates, ensuring everything runs smoothly.I\'ve contributed significantly to the Specify codebase on GitHub, tackling bug reports, feature requests, and code changes. I created and maintain the Specify Community Forum, where users can discuss and share insights about our software. I’ve authored over 450 topics and published detailed documentation to help our users.I love hosting and participating in workshops and conferences, both online and in-person. I’ve had the opportunity to speak at events like SPNHC and iDigBio and have led workshops and collaboration efforts with institutions in Canada, Japan, Switzerland, and Australia. TThese experiences have helped me build meaningful connections with biologists and data scientists. They have improved the efficiency of their data management practices and enhanced my understanding of the needs of global biodiversity data repositories and collection management. If you\'re interested in setting up a meeting to learn more about my work or about me, please connect!
