About Garrett Pendergraft
I’m a philosophy professor at a small liberal arts college. This means that I spend most of my time thinking, speaking, or writing about fundamental questions involving morality, humanity, and the nature of reality. For example, I write a lot about free will: Is human freedom compatible with causal determinism? What about divine foreknowledge? I also like to think and write about philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. My interest in technology and innovation also reaches into the classroom, where I incorporate gameful design principles to engage my students and enhance their learning experience. These efforts have led to numerous fruitful collaborations. For example, I was awarded a Pepperdine University Grant for Faculty Innovation in Technology and Learning, which supported the development of a mobile web app for use in the classroom. As a result of this project, I was also asked to be the faculty advisor for Pepperdine’s Mobile Strategy Group. I teach Logic and Business Ethics nearly every semester, and I regularly teach Epistemology, Metaphysics, and Introduction to Philosophy. I also try to maintain an active service agenda. I am serving (or have served) in leadership roles for the American Philosophical Association (Pacific Division) and the Society of Christian Philosophers (Mountain-Pacific Region). I am also a current member of the Calvary Christian School Board of Trustees and the International Executive Council of the Internet Marketing Association. I earned an undergraduate degree in Computer Science at the University of Southern California and enjoyed a brief career in visual effects before returning to school and earning a PhD in Philosophy.
