Strategic Leadership & Operations:Establishes and directs long-term strategic plans to position the National Ignition Facility (NIF) as a world-class programmatic user facility, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality experiments in support of the Stockpile Stewardship Program and broader national security missions.Facility Management & Governance:Oversees comprehensive NIF operations as a programmatic user facility, managing ~$400M annual budget and ~600 personnel across technical, engineering, and scientific disciplines. Develops and executes the annual NIF Facility Use Plan through stakeholder engagement, deploying resources for experiments, diagnostic development, laser operations, target fabrication, optics management, and supporting technologies consistent with established priorities and governance frameworks.Financial & Personnel Stewardship:Defines and maintains facility baselines, establishes executable plans, and maintains rigorous change control processes ensuring compliance with Laboratory and DOE fiscal policies. Leads recruiting, retention, and training initiatives for a diverse, high-quality workforce while partnering with discipline organizations on career development and performance management.Stakeholder Engagement & Communications:Provides strategic leadership in communicating NIF\'s scientific value to domestic and international partners, sponsors, academia, and government agencies. Develops and maintains critical partnerships across the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), Department of Defense (including DTRA, MDA, Services, and COCOMs), Intelligence Community, Department of Homeland Security, private industry, and academic institutions.International Collaboration:Cultivates and sustains international partnerships on NIF programs with key allies including the United Kingdom, France, and Japan, advancing shared scientific and national security objectives.
